GAMES: FINALLY FINISHED

Posted February 21, 2008 at 12:59 pm

Managed to finally get the games module nicely polished off last week with the games test and handed in the pack this week. I’m really quite pleased with what I contributed to the project and I still can’t believe I programmed the whole intranet! You can still play the game if you live in Plymouth too, simply goto Shinobithegame.com and click on the join us link.

GAMES: CRITIQUE

So I’m halfway through my critique at the moment where I’m studying the immersive properties of Get the Glass.  This game was made as a campaign game for the “Got Milk?” theme over in the US. If you haven’t played it already you should because it is absolutely stunning. So, what are you waiting for? Go play the game! I’ll even give you the link again, just go here!

DEFENDER

Today’s games lecture was based around 80’s games and Dan talked to us about game dynamics as well as why parts of the game interacted the way they did. He showed us Defender as an example, which is basically a combination of Pong (up and down motion of the space craft), Space Invaders (Aliens shooting at you) and Asteroids (simulated space physics and the ship shooting). Defender ScreenshotIn the practical session later on we got to have a go at the game and it was surprisingly hard. I think this was designed to get us thinking about how games like this played and how we as the player interacted with it as well as the in game elements. All this is very useful for getting us to think about our own game.

GAMES - A CONCEPT

Posted October 4, 2007 at 12:21 am

After a successful group creative session today I feel we have made good progress with the concept and story overview for our game. It really is getting quite exciting and I can’t wait to get started on developing it. Not wanting to give away too much it might involve Espionage. Nudge nudge, wink wink…

Adam also found a cool flash based game for the Got Milk marketing campaign; probably one of the best flash games any of us have ever seen.

NINTENDO DS

White Nintendo DSAfter buying a Nintendo DS Lite today, bundled with Super Mario Bros, I am very keen to explore its potential as a platform for our project for the games module. In our first lecture Dan showed us Ribbon, a game created by a group last year for the DS, which I was impressed by. I’ll have to ask Dan tomorrow what tools and hardware they used to get it working and maybe give it a go.

I’ve found a few websites already that will be worth checking out:

THOUGHTS FOR GAMES

Posted September 30, 2007 at 8:46 pm

Viewtiful JoeI just had a quick play of Viewtiful Joe: Double Trouble (I know I thought that too) on Simons’ Nintendo DS and I’ve learnt something. NEVER have a stupidly long intro with about a million cut scenes. By the time I got to actually playing the game I was nearly asleep.

Lesson Number 1: Use a small cut sequence for the start of a game or don’t use one at all.
